Baby, It's Cold Outside
Two things I really wish I had when I have to get up in the morning.
1. A heater that turned itself on about 15 minutes before my alarm goes off. That way I don't have to get out of my nice warm bed into a freezing cold house.
2. A dryer that turned itself on about the same time so I could put on nice warm clothes.
It's not so bad right now, since I don't have to be at work until 4. Unless, like today, I am working 16 and have to be to work at 8:00 am. But in a couple of weeks the schedule changes at work and I will have to start being to work at 6:00 am. That is going to make for some very cold mornings.
Well, I am off to 16 hours in prison. Wish me luck.

Icy Feet
It's been so cold lately. Well, not cold to people who live in say.... Buffalo... But cold to me. Our house is so drafty. And since we live in an all electric house, running the heater is almost out of the question. Our highest summer electric bill was $300. That is a lot. I don't want to repeat that for winter. If I dare turn on the heater David turns it right back off. But is is easier to get warm than stay cool.We have beautiful, hand made quilts that my step-mom made. I have been wearing several pairs of socks at once. Sweats and flannel pajamas are my new buddies.
I like the fall and winter best. I don't like the heat. The heat makes me cranky.
I also have been drinking a lot of nice hot tea. I love British tea best.Earl Grey, Lady Grey, Irish Breakfast Tea, English Breakfast Tea... I also like green teas and herbal teas. I have been enjoying yummy cups of chamomile at night before bed.
We have been making lots of yummy fall foods. Lots of soups and roasts and warm breads. It's awesome.
Except for the cold feet.
I need more socks.

In The Beginning
As I mentioned before, I have decided to home school Carolynn. The charter school program I wanted to use didn’t have the room for her until fall, so we are going to use a different one for now and switch in the fall. We start tomorrow. I for one am excited and scared at the same time. I am excited that I get her away from the losers that she was hanging out with. I am excited to start on the next part of this adventure. I am scared that I won’t be able to do it and she won’t learn what she needs to
.
Carolynn, on the other hand, is PISSED OFF. I don’t think she actually believed that it would happen. I think she was convinced it would never happen. She basically feels her life is over. I am the wicked witch who wants to torture her. Home school is for losers. She will just be stuck in the house all day with her mean old mom who hates her.
It’s going to be an epic battle. Luckily, I have more on my side than she does. I do worry about her emotional stability. She seems so dark all the time. I worry that she might try something drastic. Her life is ruined, or so she says, I don’t want her to feel like this is it. That kind of thing can run in families and her dad unfortunately tried some stuff similar when he was upset. I worry about it a lot. Hopefully once we get started and she sees that life hasn’t ended, she will chill out and be Carolynn again. I tell her all the time, we only have one Carolynn and we don’t want to lose the only one we get.
Next week I have a lot to do. Many of you may know, my stupid car, henceforth known as “Loser Cruiser”, is broken. We thought it might be the wheel bearings. I have no idea. But next week I should get my tax return and it will be fixed. I have been driving David’s truck since Christmas. (Also known as the “Hoopty Truck”) It is a good little truck, but I miss my car. Besides, we can’t all fit in the truck at the same time.
We made some fried chicken strips for dinner. They were so good.
The weather looks ominous. They say it might snow. Usually, I would say “Woo Hoo!” but not for tomorrow. I can’t have the whole city shut down when I finally am getting to take Carolynn to get started on the home school.
Think warm thoughts.

Let It Snow
Yesterday was a stormy day. It snowed off and on all day. Nothing stuck. The wind howled. The lights flickered. The Christmas lights are now falling off the house. It was so cold. It is still cold. I have to work tonight. It is going to be super cold. I know it. At least the weather is Christmas-y.
I am still having trouble getting in the Christmas spirit. My car is a piece of crap. Seriously. I hate it. If I don’t have to go to work, I am not driving it. Not until I can afford the repairs. Why do cars find the most inappropriate times to break? I still have bills to pay and Christmas presents I want to buy.
Here’s another added stress for you… Drizella has been digging out. She digs out and Gibby goes with her. She knows she is bad. When we catch her she slinks back and won’t come close to us. I don’t know what to do about her. Frankly, she isn’t a very good dog. She doesn’t listen. She steals food. She chews stuff up. She bites. And she digs. What am I supposed to do? If animal control finds her, we will get a big ticket and the added expense. Just what I needed right now…
And one more suck-fest to add to my Bah-Humbug spirit… Knott’s Berry Farm is free for me and the family until the 20th. It’s free for all law enforcement officers. I knew it was coming and we had been looking forward to it. But now, it looks like we won’t be going. Even though it is free to get in, we’d still have to pay for gas, parking, food (you have to get Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner), and maybe a souvenir or two. And with my stupid car being stupid, I wouldn’t try and drive it that far anyway until it is repaired.
Okay, sorry I am such a Scrooge. I am trying not to be. We are thinking about having a New Year’s Eve party. A long time ago, I used to throw a New Year’s Eve party every year. At the time, we had this grouchy neighbor who called the cops on us at about 10:30 PM. Every year. We were never that loud. She was just a Scrooge herself. Then for a long while, I had no one to invite to any sort of party. Now I do. And if my work schedule continues in the way it is, I will have New Year’s Eve off. So keep a look out for party e-vites. (They are cheap.)
Here is some more good news… Yesterday I talked to my friend Paula. I had not talked to her for a couple of years. She moved and lost her job and I lost contact. But thanks to Facebook (again) she found me again and we talked last night. She is going through some rough times too, but like me she is working through it. Her husband is having trouble finding a job right now. I suggested he apply where I work. At least it is something.
Well, I guess that is it. I have to get ready for work soon. I will take my Scrooge attitude to prison. I am sure the inmates will enjoy.
Merry Christmas To All.

The Great Pumpkin
Today we went on an adventure of epic proportions. Okay, not really epic. But it was fun. We drove to Oak Glen, California. We wanted to check out some fall colors and get some apples and pumpkins. Apparently everyone else in the world had the same idea. Parking was difficult. But we had fun. We looked in a bunch of shops. We saw some goats and peacocks. We walked though apple orchards and a pumpkin patch.
First we stopped at Parrish Pioneer Ranch. It smelled so good there. There was a bakery that must have had some good stuff because the line was out the door. There were shops and apples. They had the goats there and a cowboy show.
After that one, we went to Mom's Country Orchard. This was our favorite. We all agreed that the people were the friendliest. We got to taste a bunch of apple butter and other apple products. We also got to try some apples and some fresh peaches. It was a small store, but #1 in our book. We didn't buy anything when we went there at first, but after a day of checking out all the other cool places, we ended up going back and buying some apples and stuff. We got a bag of Spartan apples. Carolynn and her friend Marissa (who was joining us on our adventure) got caramel apples. I got this apple barbecue sauce I tried while I was there.
It was sweet and spicy and so good. I am going to put it on some chicken for dinner tonight.
Our third stop was to Riley's At Los Rios Rancho. This one was very popular. They had so much going on. They were the one's with the pumpkin patch. David, the girls and I searched for the perfect pumpkins.

In the end, only Carolynn found a pumpkin she liked. The patch was pretty well picked over and there was so little to be found. So many squashed or rotted. Oh well, at least the view was nice.

After our day of soaking in Autumn, we stopped at a park in Yucaipa and ate a picnic lunch before heading back to the desert we call home.

Since we ended up with only one pumpkin, we stopped at Apple Valley's own pumpkin patch on our way home. David and Catherine picked out some more fine pumpkins for them to take to the pumpkin carving party they are going to on Friday night. Now they each had their own pumpkin.

We saw Taylor and his girlfriend, Charity, at the pumpkin patch picking pumpkins. (Awwww.... how sweet and adorable.)
So that was our day of adventure. Now we are relaxing at home. Carolynn's friend has been dropped off at home. Catherine has eaten at least 6 apples. I have chicken cooking and I am going to put my new barbecue sauce on it.
Honestly, this has been one of the best weekend of the year.

Sleep
I finally got some. I slept yesterday when I got home from work, and then I slept all night. It was amazing. I finally feel all the way awake. I have a few errands to run today. I have to get over the PetSmart because Gibby keeps beating the stuffing out of his toys. I am going to do some yard work. We are planting a veggie garden in the back yard and sunflowers in the front yard. Plus I have some housekeeping to get done.
David is taking Carolynn to see the Wolverine movie later. Catherine has a softball game tonight. It’s going to be a start to a fabulous weekend… which I have off. Yes, me, I get a whole weekend off. I almost did a happy dance right there in my unit when I saw that on my schedule. Tomorrow Catherine has another game. We will finish our garden. We will finish our housekeeping. Then on Sunday, we will go to the Renaissance Faire. It is going to be fun. Then on Monday, it’s back to work. I can absolutely guarantee I won’t miss those inmates a bit.
The girls have been doing a little writing on their blogs. Be sure and check them out. They love comments. David is going to make them some new summery designs.

Well, I am off to enjoy my fabulous weekend. I hope the weather is great too. So far it has been. It’s May for heaven’s sake, warm it up already!

The Howling Wind
The wind is blowing quite the storm of dust. It is hard to see out there. The sand hits you and it hurts. I had sand in my hair and my ears. I had sand in my mouth. It sounds like Kansas. It makes me feel cold, even though it probably isn't that cold out there. It sounds like a storm is brewing. If this keeps up, pretty soon we will be in Oz.

Golden Goose
Our room was ready, so we checked in and now I am watching TV and relaxing. Grandpa is where Grandpa likes to be. He is having a good time. I am relaxing. I think I will go see what Grandpa is doing and maybe sit by the pool and relax.

Frozen
I did not sleep very well last night. It had nothing to do with the cold. I started thinking…
What if I messed up? What if I don’t have a job after all? What if the prison decided that no, I am not worthy? I know they gave me, in writing, a job offer that is contingent on my passing a background check and drug test. I know I am not a criminal and have never done a drug in my whole life. However, what if there is some thing on there I did not know about? What if the lab makes a mistake and says I do some drugs? Then no prison job for me. What if that happens and the woman from the old folk’s home finds someone else? Then I am so screwed. I have not job searched all week. What if I missed some other great opportunity? I got an interview at an old folk’s home in Barstow as an administrative assistant and I turned it down. I got an interview at a gas station and I gave it to David. I was supposed to take a test to work in the county child support office on Tuesday and I skipped it. What have I done? Both places said they would let me know tomorrow. The prison should have gotten my drug test results and background check done and will let me know tomorrow. The woman from the old folk’s home said she would call me tomorrow and let me know the details. I am probably going to go nuts until I know for sure. I know, I have severe mental issues.
Here are a couple of pictures I took of our yard this morning.

This is the view from my front door. I am not going out there.

This is the view from the back door.
It is sunny today but the world is white. My mom said her gate was frozen shut. Oh darn, I guess she cannot go to work today. Unfortunately, she has Direct TV and it is out today. I have cable, so we have TV. Grandpa might go crazy with no sports to watch. School was canceled today. The girls get an extra day of vacation. I am going to clean and bake today. I need to keep busy or I might have a nervous breakdown. There are no bell ringers today. I just need to keep busy. I have to think… I have a job. Not the what ifs. I mean really, what are the chances? Slim, I know. Still, there is that chance…
Mental. Yep.

Winter Wonderland
I want all of you friends and readers who live in the Midwest or any other place where it is regularly cold and snowy to not laugh.
It snowed here today. Honest to God snowed. It is the most snow that I ever saw in Apple Valley. It looks like about seven or so inches of precipitation today. It was crazy. I got up this morning to discover it was very rainy. My mom called and said the pass was closed so there would be no trip to Palm Springs today. We rescheduled for Monday. That way my parents can go too. Anyway, Apple Valley schools were open so I got the kids off to school. As I said, it was not snowing here. After the kids were at school, I went to the Salvation Army to count the buckets. I was there for a while when my mom called. She said that Carolynn had called her and that school was canceled. Carolynn thought I had gone to Palm Springs. Therefore, my mom went and braved the snow and the crazy parents to pick up Carolynn and I went to pick up Catherine. There was not that much snow, maybe an inch. However, Apple Valley is not prepared for any kind of snow so it was shut down. After we all got home, my dad called looking for my mom. She had stopped at the store to buy the stuff to make a pot of chili. I decided I wanted a pot of chili too. Carolynn and I braved the snow to go to the store. By the time we got there and home, the snow was worse. It just snowed and snowed. I have not seen it snow like that since we left Wisconsin. We have had a fire all day. We ate our big pot of chili. I had some tea. The girls went out to play in it a bit. The dogs are not happy. Elvis runs out only if he has too. Gibby was scared at first, but when the girls went and played in it, he went too.
Here are some pictures of our snowy day.

Here are the girls and their dirt snow man. This was early in the day, when there was only a little snow.

This is a snow ball fight in progress. Once again, this was early in the day.

This is our house toward the end of the day. It was getting dark. But it was still snowing.

This is Carolynn and Gibby late in the day playing in the snow.

Here are the girls and Gibby in the yard. Gibby loved chasing the girls through the snow.
Here is a short video of Gibby and the girls in the snow.
Also, my sister sent us a package yesterday. She called today and said the girls could open them up. Of course they did. So here they are.

The Big House
Today I went to the prison for a drug test and a physical. I was there for five hours. FIVE! Oh well. It was fine. The health services are in the main building, which houses the maximum-security federal penitentiary. I had to be checked, re-checked and checked again. I had to go through a bunch of big metal doors. There were really prisoners in there. They were cleaning the floor. Oh well, I peed in a cup and was checked out. I was given a letter on conditional employment. As soon as they get my test results and my background check, I can expect my real offer. I would being training on January 5.
Tomorrow I was scheduled to take a test for the county tomorrow, but I think I will skip it. I like the sound of that. I already have a job.
Wednesday I am taking my Grandpa to Palm Springs. I did not realize that Wednesday night was also Carolynn’s band concert. Luckily, my mom is going to fill in for me. She can take the pictures and listen to the Jingle Bells. It is more important right now to take Grandpa. I can hear Carolynn play any time. It will be fine if this one time I sent in a substitute. Once I am working, it is liable to happen more often. When I was working last year, missed several cross-country meets. I try to go to as many things as possible. I always tried to send in a substitute though so at least someone was there.
Today was very cold and rainy. It was snowing in places close by. It might snow here tonight. David rang the bell for the Salvation Army for 6 hours. Good thing he got that new sweatshirt. He was still cold though.

Super Sunday
Today was a fine day. Do you know why? It is because I have a job. Nope, I do not get tired of saying it. I have a job.
I slept so well the last two nights. It has been cold so it is nice to be all tucked in. My dog snuggles up too. I did not realize how terrible my sleep has been until I finally slept. I have a terrible cold too. Well, it is mostly gone now, but I still have this painful cold sore on my lip. At least my nose stopped running.
Today I left David here with all of those girls and went out. I went to Wal-Mart and picked up some pictures and paper towels. Then I went to my mom’s house. My mom, dad and I went to a little tavern and played some darts. The woman there carded me. I was not even drinking, but I was in a bar. I felt so young. I am old enough to drink plus ten. Anyway, it was fun. My dads darts were kind of falling a part. He could use some new ones. After that, we picked up some tacos at the Del Taco and went back to my mom’s house to eat them. My mom gave me a new jacket. Well, new to me. It had been my grandma’s jacket. It was much better than the old, ugly one I was wearing. That one did not zip and was once my ex-husbands. I threw it in the trash.
After that, I came home and I was going to take the friends home. Catherine’s friend had been picked up earlier in the day, but Carolynn’s friends were still here. They weren’t ready to go home, so I left them here and David, Catherine and I went to the mall. Catherine wanted some orange chicken. We looked around at the Mervyn’s going out of business sale. It says “9 Days Left”. David got a zip up hooded sweatshirt for less than $20. It says Levi on it. He did not have one and it has been so cold. The Kay-Bee Toys in the mall is going out of business too. We looked inside, but they are only at 30% off. They did not have the Barbie’s Carolynn wanted. They were gone. I went to the Hickory Farms. I had a craving for some Sweet-Hot Mustard. I love it. I got a bottle for me and one for my mom. I also picked up a book to read on my trip to Palm Springs. It s this month’s Readers Anonymous pick. It is called Cat Deck The Halls. It looks kind of cute. It is about a cat that solves mysteries.
Tomorrow I have to go to the prison for a drug test and physical. It is kind of like getting up and going to work. You know, like because I have a job to go to.
The Return Of Susan
“Is your name Jennifer?”
Yes “Nope, sorry.”
“Really? So what’s your name?”
Jennifer “Susan”
“Susan What?”
“Bowman” (Not even close)
“Hmm… you look familiar. Where did you go to high school?”
Apple Valley “Eisenhower.” (That is where my mom went.)
“What year did you graduate?”
1995 “1992”
“Oh well, you look like a girl I went to high school with.”
“Oh, well, Merry Christmas.”
Yeah, I knew him all right. He and I went to high school together. We were not really friends; he was more of a boyfriend of a friend of a friend. My junior year of high school, I walked in on him and this friend of a friend getting busy in the girls bathroom at school. Being 16, I laughed my ass off, and then proceeded to tell everyone. Yep, I was an ass. Anyway, he and the girl hunted me down later and she yelled at me. She was crying because, as she said, I ruined their first time. Right there in the girls bathroom… in the science building.
Today was my third day of bell ringing for the Salvation Army. I did it last week on Wednesday, but there was not much to say about it. There were few people and it was raining. The people that did come were running to the store or to their cars to minimize getting wet. No one stayed to chat. David did it on Friday. He gathered a lot of money, but no one chatted him up. They were too busy shopping.
Today was a better day. Besides the fabulous person from high school, plenty of old folks chatted. Everyone seems to be tightening his or her belts. One of the old folks that came by today told me he had seen on the news somewhere that the bell ringers were not allowed to ring bells. They had to replace the inside of the bells with paper clips. Another person told me that he heard that people were faking that they were really with the Salvation Army and collecting the money for themselves.
I did not get too many cranky folks today. One woman from K-Mart was rather cranky. She kept telling me I was in her way. She was trying to pull these big heavy carts and she was having trouble. Twice they got away from her and almost hit folks. I would have been in her way down the street.
The worst part about standing out there all day… Smokers. K-Mart people come out on their breaks and other people smoke out there. They stand and smoke, sometimes within feet of my kettle. I am sorry, but that is a disgusting habit. I do not care if you are a smoker reading this, it is nasty. It gives me a headache. It smells terrible. It makes it hard to breathe.
In addition, since many little kids put money in my kettle, I bought a huge bag of Dum Dum suckers to give them. They empty their tiny wallets to help the needy. I give them a tiny lolly. It is only fair.
That is all today.

Sunday, The Start To A New Week
Today so far is not doing too badly. I got an unexpected check in the mail yesterday. WOOOO! No, someone still owes me a paycheck from the pet shop, but I get a school grant and I was not expecting more until mid December. It was not much, but I squeezed plenty out of it. I paid two bills (one of which was a cell phone bill, which they were going to shut off and now they will not for another month!), I filled my gas tank, and I got enough firewood to heat us hopefully through November. I only spent $25 on firewood. I am so thrifty.
David got a tiny paycheck. I think it was for like one day. However, he seems to be getting more hours. Since he spoke with someone last week about the food handlers, they called him in for an extra day on Friday and scheduled him three days this week. (It does not sound like a lot but they were not giving him days at all some weeks) Today when he went in to pick up his check, they asked him to stay and work a full 8-hour shift. Of course he did. Therefore, his next check should be around $200 at least. WOOOOO! More bills can be paid!
I have two interviews scheduled for next week. They seem to come in waves. I got weeks with nothing and then a bunch at once. Everyone think good thoughts for me. Think employed thoughts.
I have a pot of beans on the stove. I am making refried beans. I love making those. It is cheap and a whole pot can make burritos for days. I also have a pork roast in the crock-pot. It has been cooking all day in a nice salsa verde. Later we can chow down on pork burritos. The house smells really yummy.
I have a nice fire going in the fireplace. I am warm and I have a nice cup of tea going on too. It is very windy and chilly today. It was so windy that David looked out this morning and thought it was foggy, until he realized that was dust, not fog.
Carolynn has a couple of friends over. This is her first time having friends over since we moved here. I met her friends’ moms and they were all excited for the same reason. Both of her friends are new to the area and both moms were excited that their girls made new friends. Diamond just moved here from Perris, California. That is not too far away. Her other friend, Mikhala, moved here from New York. They are all very giggly. Here is a picture of the trio. Carolynn is first, holding Gibby, then Diamond, and Mikhala is on the other end.

Busy Monday
Today I drove Carolynn and her science project to school. The science fair is on Wednesday evening.
After I dropped Carolynn off, I did my daily job search. I found a few new opportunities. Then I went to Winco. It was very crowded in there. They were having a sale. They do not have weekly sales ads like other grocery stores. However, they had a special one this week with some really good deals.
After my grocery adventure, I went out on the job search and dropped a couple of resumes and applications.
Next, I picked up the girls and we went to Taylor’s last home water polo match. He has one more match, but it is an away game. His team won in match one, but they lost match two. Maybe they were cold. It was chilly out. I was cold. I am not used to bringing jackets places. I had better get used to it. The girls were cold too, but they bundled up in Taylor’s swim parka. They got it all warm for him to get into after he got out of the pool.
Tomorrow I will go and vote. It is very important. As my mom said, if you do not vote, you do not get to complain. After that, I am making homemade pizza. It kind of got lost in the whole election, job hunt, NaBloPoMo excitement… But tomorrow is David’s 21st birthday. Therefore, I am making pizza and baking a cake. We bought him The Hulk DVD. Do not worry that I am spoiling it for him, we already gave it to him. I bought it when it first came out so it was only $15.00 instead of $19.00 and he saw the receipt I left out. We already watched it. Carolynn saw it in the theater. She likes super hero movies.
That is it…. If you haven’t voted, get out there tomorrow and VOTE!

November Has Arrived
And with it has arrived my second year at NaBloPoMo. (National Blog Posting Month) That’s right come wind, rain or shine… Come hell or high water… Come new job or my moving into a cardboard box behind K-Mart… I vow there will be a post here everyday for the entire month of November. I am not the only one I know taking up this challenge either. My mom is giving it a go. So is Trish. She and I did it last year. That is how I met Eve, who is taking the plunge with it this year. Forgetfulone, one of my favorite bloggers from my book group is taking on the whole month. So is Pam at 30something. I met Lotus at Sarcastic Mom on NaBloPoMo last time, but I am not sure she is going for a two in a row. I asked Carolynn if she wanted to give it a go, but she is too afraid she won’t have anything to post everyday or she’ll forget.
***ADD- I just saw another blogger buddy on the November Blogroll for NaBloPoMo, MuchaCostaRica, but she didn't mention it in her blog and I couldn't find her profile on NaBloPoMo.
November blew in a new blog design too. David designed it for me. I like it a lot. He designed one for Carolynn to that he drew himself (digitally of course). I really like hers too. You’ll have to check it out. He is doing one for Catherine too. He is very handy with a computer. Tuesday he will be 21. Blackjack! Ha! Ha!
We took the Halloween decorations down today and put up the Thanksgiving stuff. I do not have nearly as many Thanksgiving things. It looks very fall-like now. I guess someone must have informed Mother Nature that fall was here because it has been chilly and raining all day. It hardly ever rains like this here. David taught Catherine to cook scrambled eggs and she made eggs for everyone for lunch. My mom came by this afternoon and we went around to some places so I could drop some resume’s. We went to a coffee shop called It’s A Grind. It was a cute little shop and internet cafĂ©. Their coffee was cheaper than the Starbuck’s across the street and my mom said it tasted better too. The girl at the shop, Kymberly, suggested we try the white chocolate mocha, so we did. I am not a real coffee fan, I usually prefer tea (which they had) but this one was good. I would have to agree with my mom, I never tried a coffee from Starbucks I liked before. They also had hot chocolates and caramel apple cider. I could work there. There was another, similar coffee shop I left a resume at called One Of Life’s Perks. It was cute too.
That’s it for my first day of NaBloPoMo. It will be a fun month.
